Ontario's NDP demands release of LifeLabs contract after closure of Sudbury lab threatens 40 jobs and healthcare access.
Sudbury’s NDP MPPs are demanding the Ford government release the contract between LifeLabs and the Ontario Ministry of Health after LifeLabs announced plans to close its Sudbury lab in spring 2026, shifting testing to Toronto and Mississauga.
The move, now owned by U.S.-based Quest Diagnostics, could eliminate up to 40 lab jobs, disrupt student training programs, and delay test results due to longer transport times.
While LifeLabs says the change will improve efficiency and maintain service quality, critics and city officials warn of negative impacts on healthcare access and local jobs.
The government has stated it will not intervene.
