Nagaland students reject order to start school with Vande Mataram, citing cultural rights.
The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has rejected a Union Home Ministry directive requiring schools in Nagaland to begin the day with the national song Vande Mataram before the national anthem, calling it a cultural imposition that disregards the Naga people’s distinct identity.
The NSF, led by President Mteisuding Heraang and General Secretary Kenilo Kent, warned that enforcing the rule without consultation could provoke unrest and undermine schools as spaces for critical thinking.
It urged the Nagaland Board of School Education not to implement the directive and instructed its units to prevent compliance, emphasizing respect for Naga cultural and political rights.
