Mumbai's monorail prepares to resume with new Indian-made trains and safety-certified signaling, pending final approvals.
Mumbai’s monorail is set for a phased return after securing independent safety certification for its new trains and India-made CBTC signalling system, marking a major milestone following a five-month suspension.
The system, developed by Hyderabad-based Medha Servo Drives, is the first Indian-made CBTC system to receive such approval.
Ten new rakes have been delivered and will operate alongside the existing fleet, with service expected to resume in about two months at eight-minute intervals.
Final approval from the Metro Railway Safety Commissioner and the Urban Development Ministry is still pending, as the monorail now falls under the Indian Tramways Act.
Officials aim to integrate the monorail with Metro Line 2B’s Chembur station to improve connectivity.
