Metal detectors added at three Saskatchewan hospitals to combat rising violence, effective Feb. 23, with screenings for visitors and exemptions for staff and medical implants.
Metal detectors have been installed at three more Saskatchewan healthcare facilities—Battlefords Union Hospital, Prince Albert Victoria Hospital, and Regina Urgent Care Centre—with the latter two operational since February 5 and the former set to begin February 23.
This brings the total to eight sites with screening, part of a broader effort to address rising violence and weapons in emergency departments.
Visitors must declare and remove metal items, which are screened via bins and hand-wands, while medical implants are screened manually.
Staff, contractors, and police with ID are exempt.
The Saskatchewan Health Authority is adding 51 full-time security roles and conducting a third-party security review.
Spiritual items are exempt unless they pose a risk.
