Maine’s new red flag law takes effect, enabling courts to temporarily remove guns from individuals deemed a threat, without requiring a mental health evaluation.
Maine’s new red flag law takes effect Saturday, allowing family members and law enforcement to seek court orders to temporarily remove firearms from individuals deemed a threat to themselves or others, without requiring a mental health evaluation.
Approved by voters in November 2025, the law expands on the existing yellow flag system, which limited petitions to police and required mental health assessments.
The change follows the 2023 Lewiston mass shooting and aims to improve early intervention, especially in suicide prevention, where guns are involved in about 90% of deaths.
Over 1,000 officers have been trained, and court forms are ready for use.
While some critics, including the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine, argue the law is flawed and influenced by out-of-state groups, supporters say it provides a vital tool for preventing gun violence.
The law is now in effect, with officials planning refinements based on real-world use.
La nueva ley de bandera roja de Maine entra en vigor, permitiendo a los tribunales retirar temporalmente armas de individuos considerados una amenaza, sin requerir una evaluación de salud mental.
