Joseph Lawlor, 39, of Dublin, was convicted of murdering his friend Michael Ryan, 51, in a Finglas carpark on June 20, 2024, after a series of altercations following a day of drinking.
The jury rejected Lawlor’s self-defense claim, finding he fatally stabbed Ryan in the neck, severing a carotid artery, after Ryan returned to Lawlor’s home demanding a watch and stealing nearly €4,000.
CCTV and neighbor footage showed prior physical confrontations, including one where Lawlor strangled Ryan.
Lawlor, who claimed he acted to prevent an imminent threat, will be sentenced to life imprisonment on February 27, 2026, after the victim’s family speaks.
