India’s Congress demands pause on U.S. trade deal after Supreme Court voids Trump’s tariffs, citing risks to farmers and lack of U.S. assurances.
Following the U.S. Supreme Court’s invalidation of Trump’s global tariffs, India’s Congress party has demanded Prime Minister Modi pause and renegotiate the India-U.S. interim trade deal.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticized the haste in finalizing the agreement, noting the government knew a Supreme Court reversal was possible since December.
He questioned why the deal was rushed after Trump’s February 2 announcement and argued it could harm Indian farmers, especially as the U.S. now imposes a 10% tariff on all nations, replacing the previously agreed 18% reduction.
Ramesh insisted no import liberalization should proceed without clear U.S. assurances and accused Modi of using the deal for political gain.
El partido del Congreso de la India insta a Modi a detener y renegociar el acuerdo comercial con Estados Unidos después de que la Corte Suprema anuló los aranceles de Trump, advirtiendo sobre el daño a los agricultores.
