Governor Gavin Newsom unveiled a $239 million rehabilitation-focused learning center at San Quentin State Prison, replacing the former death chamber and marking a major step in transforming the 174-year-old facility into a model for prison reform.
The 81,000-square-foot complex, completed in 18 months, includes classrooms, a café, media studios, and reentry resources designed to prepare incarcerated individuals for life after prison.
The project, part of Newsom’s broader criminal justice reform agenda, reflects a shift from punishment to rehabilitation, with officials emphasizing that public safety depends on helping people reintegrate successfully.
The 580 individuals on death row are now housed elsewhere.
Additional upgrades, including new housing and recreation areas, are underway.
