A former New Haven police chief, Karl Jacobson, was arrested and charged with larceny for allegedly stealing $85,000 from department funds, including $81,500 from a confidential informant program and $4,000 from a youth development fund.
Prosecutors said the money was found in his personal account, and Jacobson admitted to using it for gambling, claiming he intended to repay the funds.
He turned himself in, was released on a $150,000 bond, and no other department members are implicated.
The informant program was temporarily suspended but will resume.
His next court date is March 6.
