Former Alaska lawmaker Craig Valdez arrested on federal child sex trafficking charges after allegedly grooming minors via Snapchat.
Craig Scott Valdez, 36, a former chief of staff for Alaska State Senator George Rauscher, was arrested in Juneau on federal charges of child sex trafficking and sexual exploitation.
Prosecutors allege he used Snapchat to groom at least 11 minors, including a 15-year-old girl he allegedly brought to his Anchorage home in October 2025 to exploit on his birthday.
The girl was found severely intoxicated and in distress; her mother located her via a family tracking app, confronted Valdez, and recovered her.
Authorities found evidence of deleted messages, financial transactions, and a DNA match linking Valdez to the victim.
He faces 15 years to life in prison if convicted, has been fired from his legislative role, and is scheduled for a detention hearing on February 23, 2026, with prosecutors seeking pretrial detention.
The FBI is seeking public tips.
