Florida passes bill requiring pool safety measures at vacation rentals near water, following child drownings.
A bipartisan Florida bill mandating pool safety features like fences, alarms, or covers on vacation rental properties within 150 feet of water has unanimously passed the state Senate.
The legislation, driven by a Scripps News investigation revealing at least 50 child drownings at such rentals since 2021 and 119 statewide in the past year, allows the state to fine or revoke licenses for non-compliance.
Sponsored by Senators Carlos Guillermo Smith and Danny Burgess, it now moves to the Florida House.
Airbnb praised the bipartisan effort and highlighted its own safety programs, including in-app tips and discounted safety equipment for hosts.
