Dr. Jamaica Cass, first Indigenous woman in Canada with a medical degree and PhD, earns Ontario’s top honor for her groundbreaking work in Indigenous health and education.
Dr. Jamaica Cass, a Tyendinaga Mohawk physician, has been awarded Ontario’s highest civilian honor, the Order of Ontario, for her pioneering work in Indigenous health and medical education.
Raised in poverty in Belleville, she overcame systemic barriers to become the first Indigenous woman in Canada to earn both a medical degree and a PhD.
She now practices primary care and obesity medicine on her home territory and leads Indigenous health initiatives at Queen’s University, including the creation of Canada’s first Indigenous-led health sciences campus in Moosonee.
Her work focuses on improving access to culturally appropriate healthcare and education, advocating for self-determination, accountability, and systemic change.
The award recognizes her national impact and commitment to equity and reconciliation.
