Desmond Burks to be sentenced for 2023 murder of Detroit neurosurgeon Dr. Devon Hoover.

Desmond Burks, 35, is set to be sentenced Friday for the 2023 second-degree murder of Detroit neurosurgeon Dr. Devon Hoover, after pleading guilty to multiple charges including larceny, weapons offenses, and using a computer to commit a crime. Burks, who was initially released due to insufficient evidence, was later arrested in connection with a separate road rage incident that resulted in a man’s death. The plea deal dismissed a first-degree murder charge and carries a potential sentence of 35 to 60 years in prison, plus five years for the firearm charge. Hoover’s body was found in a crawl space at his home, where investigators discovered signs of forced entry, stolen belongings, and digital activity across the U.S. and abroad. The sentencing will occur at 9 a.m. in Wayne County.
