Credit One Bank to pay $10.2 million to settle California lawsuit over abusive debt collection practices.
Credit One Bank has agreed to pay $10.2 million to settle a California lawsuit over alleged abusive debt collection practices, including excessive and harassing phone calls to consumers, some of whom had no accounts with the bank.
The settlement, reached with a coalition of district attorneys and approved by a Riverside County judge, includes $9 million in civil penalties and $1.2 million for investigation costs.
The bank also committed to complying with debt collection laws and improving its practices.
The case, part of a broader trend of state-level enforcement, stems from claims that Credit One or its vendors made up to eight daily calls on overdue accounts, sometimes repeatedly, even after consumers requested no further contact.
The bank did not admit wrongdoing.
