The lion and dragon dance competition has returned to Yangon’s Chinatown after a five-year pause due to the pandemic, drawing large crowds and reviving a cherished cultural tradition.
Organized by the Myanmar Lion and Dragon Dance Federation from February 18 to 20, the event featured four new-generation pole lion teams, seven professional pole lion teams, and six dragon dance teams.
Performers executed high-risk routines on poles up to nine feet high, judged on movement, quality, and audience engagement.
The competition aims to preserve heritage, foster unity, and inspire youth, with participants like 16-year-old San Min embracing the challenge.
Spectators, including families and longtime fans, celebrated the vibrant displays, symbolizing cultural resilience and community renewal in Yangon’s Chinatown.
