Whitecourt council hears opposition to rezoning request for Eagle’s Nest transitional housing due to safety and zoning concerns.
Whitecourt council heard opposition from local business representative Joanne Belke to a rezoning request by the Soaring Eagle Support Society (SESS), operator of the Eagle’s Nest transitional housing facility near Highway 43.
Belke cited ongoing issues including public intoxication and disorderly conduct, arguing these affect safety, property values, and the town’s reputation.
She urged SESS to follow the same zoning and safety regulations as other businesses and operate in a properly zoned area with enforceable permit conditions.
Mayor Ray Hilts confirmed SESS has been asked to comply with municipal rules and that council will not meet with the group after the application is filed to ensure fairness.
A public hearing will be required before any decision.
SESS did not respond to requests for comment.
