U.S. President Trump welcomed Bangladesh’s new PM Tarique Rahman, pushing a secretive trade deal with major economic and defense demands.
U.S. President Donald Trump congratulated Tarique Rahman on his swearing-in as Bangladesh’s prime minister following the February 12 parliamentary elections, urging swift implementation of a reciprocal trade agreement that grants duty-free access to 2,500 Bangladeshi products, including garments made with U.S. cotton, while requiring Bangladesh to lower tariffs on 7,132 U.S. goods, increase military purchases from the U.S., import $15 billion in LNG, and limit defense imports from certain countries.
Trump also called for finalizing defense agreements to enable access to advanced American military equipment.
The deal, negotiated under a Non-Disclosure Agreement by an interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, has drawn criticism over its secrecy, lack of public consultation, and potential fiscal and sovereignty risks.
Rahman outlined an 180-day plan focused on law and order, price controls, energy stability, public transport upgrades, and anti-corruption efforts, while asserting a “Bangladesh First” foreign policy and calling for national unity.
