UNESCO denied Australia’s request to list the Parramatta Female Factory as a World Heritage Site due to insufficient criteria.
UNESCO has rejected Australia’s bid to designate the historic Parramatta Female Factory precinct as a World Heritage Site, citing that its institutional uses did not meet the required criteria.
The site, one of the nation’s oldest sandstone buildings from the 1820s, served as a residence for female convicts and children before becoming an asylum and school.
The decision ends years of debate amid controversy over a state plan to build 2,500 homes and a light rail line on the site.
While the precinct was added to Australia’s National Heritage List in 2017, it will not gain the international recognition and protections of sites like the Sydney Opera House or the Great Barrier Reef.
