Uber to tighten driver background checks after exposé on past violent crimes.
Uber is planning stricter background checks for drivers after a New York Times investigation revealed that individuals with past convictions for violent felonies, sexual offenses, child or elder abuse, and stalking were allowed to drive on its platform if the crimes occurred more than seven years ago.
The company is considering banning anyone with such records regardless of when the offense occurred and reviewing its seven-year rule for lesser charges.
Between 2017 and 2022, Uber received a safety incident report roughly every eight minutes, with over 400,000 incidents reported—far more than previously disclosed.
The changes, which could set new industry standards, come amid growing scrutiny, high-profile cases, and a federal jury awarding $8.5 million in a rape lawsuit.
Uber has not announced a timeline for implementation.
