A Tuscaloosa jury sentenced Luther Watkins Jr. to life without parole for killing police investigator Dornell Cousette in 2019, rejecting the death penalty.
A Tuscaloosa County jury has sentenced Luther Watkins Jr., 26, to life in prison without parole for the 2019 capital murder of police investigator Dornell Cousette, rejecting the death penalty.
The verdict followed a five-day trial and a 7-5 jury split, after Watkins was convicted of shooting the officer in the head during an attempted arrest at a West Tuscaloosa home.
Prosecutors argued the crime was especially heinous, while defense attorneys claimed self-defense, citing Watkins’ fear and lack of backup for the officer.
The decision marks the second time since 2019 that the district attorney has sought the death penalty in a capital murder case.
