Three reviews found dog research at Lawson Institute followed rules, but hospital ended it after public backlash.
Three independent reviews have confirmed that animal research involving dogs at London’s Lawson Research Institute, including procedures inducing heart attacks, complied with all provincial and national regulations and ethical standards.
Conducted by the Canadian Council on Animal Care, Western University’s animal care committee, and a hospital-commissioned panel, the assessments found no evidence of misconduct or animal mistreatment.
However, all reviews identified significant communication failures between St. Joseph’s Health Care, Lawson, oversight bodies, and the public, along with confusion about the animal care committee’s role.
Despite the findings, the hospital has ended all dog research following public outcry and media scrutiny.
