Pakistan's defense minister denies military dominance despite constitutional changes granting army chief lifetime immunity and expanded powers.
In February 2026, Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif denied that Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir is a de facto ruler, calling the current system a "hybrid government" where the military supports, rather than controls, the civilian government.
Despite the 27th Constitutional Amendment granting Munir lifetime immunity, control over the military and nuclear command, and a new five-star rank, Asif maintained that democratic institutions remain intact.
Critics argue the changes have concentrated unprecedented power in the military, especially through the Special Investment Facilitation Council and a restructured judiciary, weakening checks and balances.
While civilian leaders remain in office, real authority is seen to reside with Munir in Rawalpindi.
El ministro de Defensa de Pakistán niega la dominación militar a pesar de los cambios constitucionales que otorgan al jefe del ejército inmunidad de por vida y poderes ampliados.
