A Nigerian federal court has blocked the Central Bank of Nigeria and over 20 commercial banks from releasing N1.2 billion in copyright levy funds to the Musical Copyright Society of Nigeria (MCSN).
The interim injunction, issued on February 5, 2026, was granted at the request of 11 record labels, including Mavin Records and Universal Music Group, who had opted out of MCSN’s collective management.
The court ordered all parties to preserve the funds, file compliance affidavits within three days, and account for any money already received by MCSN related to their recordings.
The case is set for a full hearing on March 12, 2026.
