Micron opens a $2.75 billion semiconductor plant in India, backed by U.S.-India tech cooperation, to boost AI and chip manufacturing.
Micron Technology CEO Sanjay Mehrotra praised India’s government under Prime Minister Modi for supportive policies enabling a $2.75 billion semiconductor assembly and test facility in Sanand, Gujarat, calling it a landmark project for India’s chip manufacturing.
The 500,000-square-foot site, featuring cleanrooms equivalent to 10 cricket fields and using materials matching three and a half Eiffel Towers in steel and 100 Olympic pools in concrete, will package and assemble advanced memory wafers.
Mehrotra highlighted the facility’s role in advancing artificial intelligence and noted Micron as the only Western Hemisphere company developing and manufacturing such components.
The project, part of the U.S.-India PAX SILICA initiative, expands Micron’s India operations, which include R&D centers in Bangalore and Hyderabad, 24,000 employees, and significant contributions to global innovation, including nearly 2,000 patents and advanced DRAM development.
