Maine seeks $250,000 to launch statewide VINE alerts for inmate releases, improving victim safety and notification.
Maine sheriffs, led by Penobscot County Sheriff Troy Morton, are seeking $250,000 in state funding for a statewide rollout of the VINE system, a free app that provides real-time inmate release alerts and jail record access.
The program, already active in several counties and used to send about 6,000 notifications since 2024, allows victims, witnesses, and families to receive anonymous alerts and access community resources.
Maine is the last state without such a system, and officials say the initiative—costing $150,000 annually to maintain—would improve public safety and victim notification beyond current legal limits.
