Hydro-Québec proposes nearly doubling electricity rates for large data centres and crypto operations by late 2026 due to high energy use and limited economic benefits.
Hydro-Québec is proposing to nearly double electricity rates for large data centres and cryptocurrency operations in Quebec, with new rates set to take effect in late 2026.
The changes, pending regulator approval, would raise prices for data centres using over 5 megawatts to about 13 cents per kilowatt-hour over five years, and increase rates for crypto operations to 19.5 cents over three years, citing their high energy use and limited economic benefits.
The move aims to ensure these industries cover infrastructure and grid costs while maintaining competitive rates for other consumers.
The proposal comes as data centre electricity demand is projected to rise sevenfold by 2035, surpassing 1,000 megawatts.
