Himachal Pradesh's CM warns new trade deals could hurt local apple, almond, and walnut farmers by flooding markets with cheaper imports.
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu warned on February 19, 2026, that new India trade deals with the U.S., New Zealand, and the EU could harm apple, almond, and walnut farmers in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.
He said reduced import duties may flood markets with foreign produce, driving down prices and threatening livelihoods of small and medium farmers.
Sukhu highlighted the importance of horticulture to the regional economies, noting Himachal’s apple sector supports nearly 2.5 lakh families and generates about Rs.
5,000 crore annually.
He criticized the central government’s trade policy as harmful to domestic agriculture and called for a reassessment to protect farmers.
