A former RCMP officer confirmed all guns in a photo from the Tumbler Ridge shooter’s home were legal in 2024, though one was later banned.
A former RCMP weapons officer confirmed that all firearms in a photo posted by Jennifer Jacobs, mother of Tumbler Ridge shooter Jesse Van Rootselaar, were legal to own in Canada in August 2024, though a Kriss Vector semi-automatic rifle later became banned in December 2024.
The photo showed multiple non-restricted firearms, including shotguns, rifles, and a handgun, all of which required only a valid possession and acquisition licence (PAL).
Jacobs held a valid PAL, though no firearms were registered to her.
RCMP seized two firearms from the home, including an unregistered shotgun used in the killings, and additional weapons from the school, but did not confirm if any from the photo were used in the attack or had been previously seized and returned.
Van Rootselaar had an expired PAL and no registered weapons.
The RCMP declined to release details about the seized firearms due to the ongoing investigation.
