Fire engineer Dave Tysdal retired from the Coeur d'Alene Fire Department on January 31 after 24 years of service, following serious injuries sustained during an ambush on June 29, 2025, while responding to a wildfire on Canfield Mountain.
The attack, carried out by Wess Roley, resulted in the deaths of two battalion chiefs and left Tysdal with lasting physical impairments.
Recognized for his leadership in rescue operations and as a founding member of the Idaho Disaster Dogs K-9 team, Tysdal was recently nominated for the Medal of Honor and previously won Employee of the Year in 2016.
His retirement was prompted by ongoing recovery needs, and the department honored his dedication and service.
