COMESA investigates Meta’s WhatsApp API changes restricting third-party AI, citing anti-competitive concerns.
The COMESA Competition and Consumer Commission has launched an investigation into Meta over changes to WhatsApp’s Business API that restrict third-party AI services from accessing the platform, while allowing Meta’s own AI tools.
The probe, initiated in February 2026, examines whether these changes, made in October 2025, abuse Meta’s dominant market position and harm competition in the region’s digital economy.
The CCCC is assessing potential violations of regional competition laws and has invited stakeholder input.
The move follows similar actions by regulators in the EU, Italy, Brazil, and South Africa, with Meta citing platform integrity and system strain as reasons for the restriction.
