Chhattisgarh’s Sen community bans private phone talks between engaged couples, requiring parental presence to reduce breakups.
The Sen community in Chhattisgarh’s Balod district has banned engaged couples from private phone conversations, requiring all communication to occur only in the presence of parents to reduce post-engagement breakups.
The rule, led by district president Santosh Kaushik and supported by state officials, follows a prior ban on pre-wedding photo shoots and may expand across the state.
The community, numbering about 250,000 and primarily in the salon industry, also ended the tradition of hiding a brother-in-law’s shoe during weddings and will sever ties with members who convert to another religion.
While some younger members support the move for strengthening family bonds, others, including journalist Poonam Ritu Sen, criticize it as a violation of personal freedom and the right to assess compatibility before marriage.
