California approves $590M loan to save Bay Area transit jobs and service.
California has approved a $590 million emergency loan for Bay Area transit agencies to prevent service cuts and layoffs amid post-pandemic ridership declines.
The funds, managed by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, will help BART, Muni, Caltrain, and AC Transit maintain operations while the region pursues a long-term solution through the proposed 2026 Connect Bay Area Act—a regional sales tax that could generate $980 million over 14 years.
BART warns it may close 10 to 15 stations and cut service if funding is not secured.
The loan must be repaid over 12 years.
