A Brazilian man, denied asylum, was convicted for placing a harmless fake bomb outside MI5’s London HQ on New Year’s Day, citing attention and mental health struggles.
Julian Valente Pereira, a 32-year-old Brazilian man whose asylum appeal was denied on December 31, 2025, has been found guilty of placing a fake explosive device outside MI5’s London headquarters on January 1, 2026.
The device, made from paper, tape, and a string fuse, triggered a terror alert and prompted a counter-terrorism response, though it posed no real danger.
Pereira, who had lived in the UK since 2018 and remained illegally since 2019, admitted to seeking attention for his grievances against the Home Office but denied intending to cause fear.
He claimed mental health struggles, including schizophrenia, and alleged mistreatment in the asylum system.
The court heard he had previously attempted to deliver documents to Buckingham Palace and made threatening messages.
Sentencing is pending.
