Australia awards $4B contract to Austal for 8 new warships, boosting defense and jobs.
Australia has awarded a $4 billion contract to Western Australian shipbuilder Austal to construct eight Landing Craft Heavy vessels, part of a major military modernization effort.
The 100-meter ships, based on the Damen LST100 design, will be built at Austal’s Henderson facility and the Henderson Common User Facility, with work starting later in 2026 and the final vessel expected by 2038.
The project supports the 2024 National Defence Strategy, enhances sovereign shipbuilding capacity, and is expected to create thousands of skilled jobs.
