Anti-immigration activist Philip Dwyer gets 3-month suspended sentence for assault during 2024 election clash in Ireland.
Philip Dwyer, a 58-year-old anti-immigration campaigner and independent election candidate, received a three-month suspended prison sentence after pleading not guilty to affray during a November 24, 2024, clash outside a church in Bray, County Wicklow.
The incident, which occurred during the 2024 general election campaign, involved Dwyer and People Before Profit candidate Kellie McConnell and her canvassers.
Dwyer claimed he acted in self-defense after being pushed, using a selfie-stick for protection, while McConnell alleged he brandished a retractable baton and used abusive language.
CCTV and recordings were presented in court, but no injuries were reported.
The judge called the event “atrocious” but suspended the sentence due to lack of physical harm and Dwyer’s cooperation with authorities.
