A 32-unit apartment building in Wellington approved despite resident concerns over traffic, safety, and environmental impacts.
A seven-storey, 32-unit apartment building named Mayfair has been approved in Mt Victoria, Wellington, despite opposition from residents and public figures. The project, proposed after zoning changes in late 2024, was reviewed by Commissioner Alistair Aburn, who found its impact on the townscape and nearby heritage area acceptable. Concerns included 25,000 truck movements, 5,000 cubic meters of earthworks, safety risks on a shared driveway, and environmental impacts like erosion and dust. Council officials acknowledged these risks but said they could be managed. Aburn noted visual effects would be temporary and mitigated by landscaping. Residents have 15 days to appeal to the Environment Court. The developer, Forma Group, did not comment.
