The UK won’t ban alcohol ads like unhealthy foods, despite health concerns and a £20M investment in addiction tech.
The UK government has no immediate plans to restrict alcohol advertising like it did for unhealthy foods and drinks, which since January 2026 have been banned on TV before 9pm and online.
Current alcohol ads follow voluntary industry codes, and while the government is reviewing whether similar rules should apply, it has not committed to new regulations.
This follows the removal of proposed alcohol marketing limits from the 10-Year Health Plan in 2023, reportedly due to industry lobbying.
The Department of Health says it continues to assess the issue, especially given alcohol’s role in around 15,000 annual deaths, and is investing £20 million in tech-driven addiction solutions.
