A Sydney man was charged with terrorism offences after extremist material was found on a phone during a 2025 traffic stop, under a new federal law.
A 31-year-old Sydney man, Abdallah El Chami, has been charged with terrorism-related offences after police found violent extremist material on a phone during a forensic review following a New Year’s Eve traffic stop in Yagoona.
Initially arrested on drug and financial crime charges, he was later rearrested at his Bass Hill home after a raid uncovered additional phones, storage devices, and a knife.
New charges include using a carriage service to possess extremist material and possessing a prohibited weapon.
He was granted conditional bail with strict requirements, including regular police reporting, a $20,000 surety, and restrictions on phone use.
The case stems from a federal law enacted in January 2024 that criminalizes accessing terrorist-related content online.
He is due in court on March 3.
