A shipwreck in Lake Erie confirmed as the 1867 bark Clough, lost in 1868, is now the focus of a Toledo exhibit honoring its discovery and a late researcher.
A shipwreck in Lake Erie has been confirmed as the bark Clough, a 125-foot, three-masted vessel built in 1867 and owned by Ohio quarry owner Baxter Clough.
The ship sank in September 1868 while transporting stone.
The Cleveland Underwater Explorers (CLUE) identified it using historical research, site visits, and mapping.
The National Museum of the Great Lakes is hosting a temporary exhibit in Toledo from February 18 to April 16 showcasing the discovery, the ship’s history, and the archaeological process.
The exhibit honors CLUE founder David VanZandt, who died in 2024 while researching the site.
