Seven Coimbatore inmates transferred amid security concerns; first case filed under Tamil Nadu’s 2025 money lending law after man set himself on fire.

On February 19, 2026, seven inmates from Coimbatore Central Prison were transferred to prisons in Madurai, Salem, Vellore, and Cuddalore on administrative grounds, including six accused in the murder of TMMK functionary Farooq and one identified as an ISIS sympathizer. Separately, Tamil Nadu police filed the first case under the state’s 2025 Money Lending Entities Act on February 13, involving a Viluppuram man who set himself on fire after recovery agents attempted to seize his JCB vehicle without legal process, leading to charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and new state laws.
