Pritzker proposes a $56B budget with school boosts, new social media tax, no broad tax hikes.
Governor JB Pritzker has proposed a $56 billion budget for fiscal year 2027, a 1.6% increase driven largely by mandatory costs like pensions and education.
Discretionary spending would grow by just 0.5%.
The plan avoids broad tax hikes, instead introducing a new tax on social media companies with at least 100,000 Illinois users, charging 10 cents to 50 cents per user monthly, plus a cap of $165,000 monthly for larger platforms.
Additional revenue comes from adjusting business loss deductions and increasing gaming taxes.
The budget includes a $305 million increase for K-12 schools, launches a new Department of Early Childhood, and maintains funding for immigrant seniors’ health care.
It assumes continued federal funding in ongoing legal disputes and does not include new taxes on high earners or corporations.
Pritzker propone un presupuesto de $ 56 mil millones con aumentos escolares, un nuevo impuesto a las redes sociales, sin aumentos de impuestos generales.
