A NYC man pleaded guilty to fraud for falsely claiming ownership of the New Yorker Hotel using a forged deed.
Mickey Barreto, a New York City man, has pleaded guilty to fraud after attempting to claim ownership of the New Yorker Hotel, where he lived rent-free for years by invoking a city housing law protecting single-room occupants in pre-1969 buildings.
After winning a court ruling for possession of his room due to the hotel’s failure to appear at a hearing, prosecutors say he forged a deed and submitted it to a city website, falsely claiming ownership of the entire building.
He also tried to collect rent and seize the hotel’s bank accounts.
The building is owned by the Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity, a South Korean religious group.
Barreto was evicted in 2024, sentenced to six months in prison—already served—and five years of probation.
He maintained he did not intend to defraud and made no profit.
