A New Zealand sinkhole near a wastewater plant may have released treated sewage into a stream, prompting a swimming and shellfish gathering ban.
A sinkhole near the Onemana Wastewater Treatment Plant in New Zealand has prompted the Thames-Coromandel District Council to issue an urgent health alert, warning the public not to swim, fish, or gather shellfish south of the Onemana Drive carpark due to concerns that treated wastewater may have entered a wetland and stream flowing to the beach.
The council has turned off nearby irrigation systems, installed warning signs, and begun water sampling and monitoring to assess risks.
The incident follows recent wastewater infrastructure issues, including a major failure in Wellington, but this case involves treated rather than raw sewage.
The alert remains in effect until further notice.
