New Zealand fast-tracks 2,800-home project in Queenstown to ease housing crisis and boost economy.
A major housing project in Queenstown, New Zealand, has been fast-tracked for approval, allowing 2,800 homes and a commercial precinct to be built.
Submitted in June 2025, the project by RCL Homestead Bay Limited was approved by an independent panel after six months, becoming the 10th under New Zealand’s Fast-track system.
It is expected to boost GDP by $720.3 million and create about 4,420 construction jobs.
The development includes independent wastewater systems to reduce strain on existing infrastructure, with potential future integration into the council network.
The approval aims to address Queenstown’s severe housing shortage and rising costs, where median home prices far exceed the national average.
