A 67-year-old man from Wildwood Crest, William Morelli, was arrested and charged with theft for allegedly stealing over $175,000 worth of steel parts from the renovation site of the Giant Ferris Wheel at Morey’s Piers in Wildwood, New Jersey.
The theft, which occurred over several days in early February, involved metal from the 156-foot-tall ride, a major attraction since 1985.
Surveillance footage and a tip led to the arrest.
Morelli was released on a summons under New Jersey’s bail reform law.
Despite the loss, Morey’s Piers confirmed the refurbishment project remains on track for a summer reopening.
