Ghana's president pushes local mining value addition, reforms, and sustainability at 2026 summit.
President John Dramani Mahama launched Ghana’s 2026 Mining Sector Local Content Summit in Takoradi, calling for a shift from exporting raw minerals to building local value addition, indigenous ownership, and sustainable development.
He emphasized transforming procurement, advancing digital and green mining, investing in education, and formalizing artisanal mining.
The government revoked over 300 fraudulent or inactive small-scale mining licenses, strengthened enforcement, and introduced a new medium-scale category.
Mahama highlighted Ghana’s progress in local ownership, citing the Black Volta Gold Project, and stressed that mining must leave communities better off, with environmental rehabilitation and inclusive governance.
He urged international partners to build genuine local capacity and called for binding commitments to ensure long-term economic resilience.
