A former Optum exec was convicted for stealing $1.2M via a fake employee who got paid for no work.
Karan Gupta, a 47-year-old Indian-origin former senior director at Optum, was convicted in 2026 of stealing over $1.2 million by hiring a friend as a ghost employee using a fake resume.
The friend, who did no work, received a $100,000+ salary with raises and bonuses for nearly four years while Gupta, his supervisor, took more than half the pay as kickbacks.
Funds were withdrawn in cash and transferred to Gupta’s accounts, uncovered after his 2019 firing for unrelated fraud.
He was found guilty on multiple counts of wire fraud and money laundering.
