On February 18, 2026, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha laid the foundation stone for the Shri Shankaracharya Temple in Katra, a project first envisioned in 1967 and revived in 2025 through a land donation agreement.
The Rs 31.51 crore temple, funded by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, will include 50 commercial shops, access roads, and public utilities.
The initiative aims to boost pilgrimage, create jobs, and support local self-help groups by expanding their procurement from Rs 5 crore to Rs 12 crore annually.
Additional plans include a museum, light and sound show, and helicopter services to improve access.
