The Delhi High Court has asked the Union government, RBI, and NPCI to respond to a Public Interest Litigation seeking stronger safeguards against rising UPI frauds.
Filed by retired employee Pankaj Nigam, the petition details his loss of ₹1.24 lakh in a rental scam in February 2024 and highlights systemic gaps in reporting, investigation, and recovery.
It cites a sharp rise in UPI frauds—from ₹111 crore in 2020-21 to ₹573 crore in 2022-23—and calls for mandatory KYC, a centralized complaint platform, better data access, inclusion of smaller frauds in e-Zero FIR, and a new procedure for cross-jurisdictional cases.
The court has directed the authorities to file responses.
