Cocaine levels in Nantucket wastewater were three times the national average from July 2025 to December 2025, peaking in October.
Wastewater testing on Nantucket from July 2025 to February 2026 revealed cocaine levels consistently three times higher than the national average, peaking at nearly 3,000 nanograms per liter in October and remaining elevated through December before declining.
The data, collected hourly from about 70% of the island’s population via the Surfside Wastewater Treatment Facility, is analyzed by Biobot Analytics as part of a $30,000 annual public health monitoring program.
While cocaine levels stayed high, other drugs including fentanyl, methamphetamine, xylazine, and prescription opioids remained at or below national averages.
Officials note that elevated readings may not indicate increased use, possibly due to drug disposal or alcohol consumption affecting metabolism.
The system has also helped detect early flu spikes, and town leaders plan to alert health and law enforcement partners if sustained drug use trends emerge.
